Thoughts are not facts...or forever

It is common for us humans to mistake our thoughts for facts, because they can feel so loud and sure in our heads.  But while our thoughts and feelings have power, they are not insurmountable truths, they are bits of data being processed.  We have the power inside us to reframe our beliefs, and change our stories...

How to flow through your thoughts and calm the waters...

💧 Recognise that thoughts are often influenced by emotions and past experiences, which can sometimes cloud our judgment.  Our memories are powerful things, sometimes bringing us comfort and sometimes bringing us pain, and the way we experienced something in the past can influence how we cope with things in our present.  Being aware of what can affect our thoughts can help us to alleviate some of their weight.

💧 Use a journal to write down your thoughts and feelings. This can help you gain perspective and see your thoughts more objectively.  Although we live in a digital age, if you can write thoughts down in a physical way - with pen and paper - this can help even more.  Writing things down gives you more ownership of them, and puts your more in control of understanding them.

💧 Practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a good friend. This can help you avoid harsh self-judgment and negative self-talk.  Would you ever tell a stranger on the street that you hate how they look, or that they are horrible people?  No!  Because it's easier to recognise (and curb) our unkindness to others than it is to recognise using it against ourselves.

💧 Use visualisation techniques to imagine your thoughts as clouds passing through the sky. Let them come and go without holding onto them or attaching meaning to them.  Our brains process millions of experiences and feelings every day - and not every single one will stay.  In remembering that thoughts are not facts, also remember that thoughts are not forever.  "This too shall pass".

Next time a negative thought comes into your mind, try to challenge it by asking yourself if there is any evidence to support it.   Is the thought an accurate reflection of reality, or is it being coloured by something that has happened, or by how you currently feel?

By practicing mindfulness techniques, we can learn to observe our thoughts without being controlled by them, leading to a more peaceful and balanced state of mind.
